• Getting a Handle On It

Well, I guess this website thing got away from me. I had the best of intentions of sharing some thoughts on more of a regular schedule. But then I get busy throwin’ and forget all about the computer. Clay doesn’t mix very well with the electronics I guess.

Anyway, I’ve been pulling some handles for mugs. I like to keep them pretty simple. Pull them into a nice size strap, curl them up on a drying board, and let them firm up. Then I attach them to the mugs when both are firm enough to squeeze together without squishin everything and sticking to my fingers. Nothing too fancy to put them together. If they are both about the same moisture level I may put a little slip on one side and press them tight.

Simple, but I don’t mind if they all have a little character. I don’t want all my mugs to look like they came off a factory line.

Heres a couple mugs drying out looking real pretty in the mornin light.

These ones are a little fancier than I usually make. But I’m trying something a little different. More of a young trendy style for a young lady at a coffee shop. Saw some at the local place a little while ago and thought they were worth tryin something new.

Well, I guess I’ll sign off for now. I’ll see if I can get some more thoughts typed out. And get my old phone to take a few decent pictures.

  • A Walk Along the River

Went out for a walk along the river a few days ago. Still pretty chilly here in March.

Sometimes I just like to stand and watch the water go by. It makes me think of how time goes by. I wonder how many pots I’ve dumped into the river of time. I wonder where they ended up. How many have crashed onto rocks and been tossed away. I suppose someday most will return to the dirt which they were made from.

Pottery isn’t forever. But neither are we.

  • Threw Some Bowls Today

Made 12 by the time I was done. Finished before lunch. I aim to trim them this afternoon.

Does anyone remember some kind of 12×12 idea for potters? I coulda swore Michael Kline had written about it but the only trace I can find is here. https://whistlecreek.blogspot.com/2012/11/time-to-feed-blog.html

Maybe my mind is playing tricks on me. Or maybe the web isn’t as forever as I’ve been told.

Anyway, how can you not love a simple bowl. Especially the handmade pottery kind.

A photo! Sometimes as I’m making I think about where these bowls will end up. Will somebody keep them together in a complete set? Will I give them away? Maybe I’ll keep a couple for myself.

These are a perfect size for ice cream. They make good sauce bowls too for a family dinner. Really, you could use them for about anything.

I hope your day is going well. Thanks for stoppin by.

  • A Little About Me

The names Smokey. The tax man calls me Samuel but I go by Sam as well. I reckon you could say I’m a bit of a jack-of-all-trades, but potterys always been my favorite thing.

I ain’t no fancy artist. I like to keep it simple – just me, my trusty old wheel, and a pile of clay. I reckon there ain’t nothing more satisfying than watching a lump of mud turn into something beautiful right before your eyes. Pottery has been my apart of life for as long as I can remember.

  • Hello world!

It is nice to meet you. I’m starting this blog to tell some tales, share some knowledge, and learn new things.

I had a friend help me set up this site so it will probably take me a while to get the hang of it. Sorry there are no fancy pictures or pretty colors yet. I’ll see what I can do.

    Thank you for stopping by…
